Setting up OpenDNS on your Pandora

top

I’m pretty sure the Open Pandora crowd has heard about what DNS are. Domain Name Servers. When you put an address like www.pandoralive.info in your browser bar, your browser will connect to the DNS servers to resolve the name and find the IP address attached to it. Now, do you know what DNS servers you are currently using on your machines, and your Pandora ? Mmm. Do you ?

MarkW: An Unusual Porter

While I am not as much of an active developer/porter as I would like to be, I do keep on eye on what’s happening on the repo, and since 2013, I have noticed that there was some guy who started to port stuff that was certainly different from what people usually expect in the community. His first few ports were not so extraordinary in themselves, but then came Jstock, CASPack and R. Wow. I then realized this MarkW was not your standard Pandora user. And not your usual porter either.

I haven’t been super active on PandoraLive in the past week (hence the reason for fewer posts than usual) and guess what? Looks like our friends the porters and devs on Pandora have been taking some time off as well, since this week is almost devoid of news. There’s a couple of updates and a couple of releases, still worth checking out none the less.

Lunar Silver Star Story Complete [PS1]

top

Since Final Fantasy VII on PS1, which was my first official venture in the J-RPG world (I had been playing US-made RPGs for a while before though), I have been looking for great J-RPG games. But hey, when you start with FFVII, your standards are going to be incredibly hard to live up to. FFVII still remains to this day one of my favorite games (for many, many reasons), yet there are some very decent J-RPGs out there to consider. I have been playing Lunar Silver Star Story for the past few weeks, and it is without doubt another worthy gem in the J-RPG universe.

As I predicted last week, these past 7 days were very busy on the repo. I guess you are expecting me to simplify your job as a reader and give you some highlights huh? Well, Reicast now runs ShenMue and it looks like it’s kind of stable. You get Blood remade with the Eduke32 engine. Nice mod! PtitSeb releasing another mod for FreeSpace2, especially huge and resource hungry, The Babylon Project. And there’s much more…

Starcraft on Open Pandora: How the Port Came to Be

sc

When the Alive and Kicking Coding Competition for the Open Pandora Scene was about to close, one week before the deadline, Notaz (of Picodrive fame) had a special request: to move the deadline till the end of the weekend instead of the initial Saturday evening one. That’s when I knew Notaz was on to something, while he would not disclose anything else than “it’s not Pandora specific”. The deadline came and went and Notaz could not finish his project on time. A couple of weeks later, he released what he had been working on: a perfect port of Starcraft running on the Pandora. This is an impressive feat, since Starcraft is closed source, and only available as a x86 binary in the first place, and Pandora runs on ARM hardware. So, how did he do it ?

Another active week on the repo with 8 software updates and 8 new releases. You want the highlights ? Well, the latest version of Firefox, 29, is out, but it’s so bad that it’s almost a joke. I’m talking about Mozilla’s work here to screw up the interface and make stuff much slower. Well done guys! Now I guess you have to try Qupzilla if you haven’t yet. Thankfully the other news of the past week do not make matters worse everywhere. Check it out.

What You Guys Liked in April 2014

April was so-so in Japan. The weather has been unstable, the cherry blossoms were great but really, really too short this year again (about a week and that’s it! The picture above is from Yawata-shi in the Kansai area, a great spot by the way) – so we only had a single hanami party, which is kind of disappointing. But we had tons of good stuff related to the Pandora and Pyra to keep us busy. Maybe you missed some of these excellent articles that Everyone had been talking about…?
