Weekly Software News Jan 20th to 26th

weekly

Another busy week with a lot of updates, and a few releases, all of the new releases being tied to the ongoing coding competition. Well, the deadline is approaching so it’s only natural to see more releases at this stage. Note that this is another excellent week for emulators, since the Emu Ex Plus Alpha emulators have all been updated, and there’s a new PPSSPP build out there which is more solid than ever before. I’ll come back on that PPSSPP update in a separate article soon…

Etherpad: Edit Stories Across Computers

Your Pandora is awesome for office applications. You already know it. You have LibreOffice in your pocket, Geany and gedit to do real code, and so much more to actually be productive when you are stuck in a small space. One thing was missing from LibreOffice : the online collaboration bit. You could try to use Google Docs with Firefox, but honestly this is a little bit too demanding for the Pandora (JS junk heavy) and it’s so slow you can make a coffee between typing two words. So, is there any solution for you, for online collaboration ? Well, there is Etherpad.

…And How My Ass was Handed to Me

blogheader2final

Continuing from my previous post. After finding this hidden underground community of players pursuing intense matches and registering for a nearby tournament held by them, I had no idea about what to expect. The tournament turned out to be nine or ten guys stuffed into a single room playing Brawl all day. There were a couple of players that were only slightly better than me, but for the most part I was beaten up pretty badly. All my “skills” amounted to pretty much nothing against other players with that same drive towards the game. Playing against CPUs and weak players most of the time had not prepared me for entirely new tactics like these. It was very fun, though, and I met a lot of people with various backgrounds, sharing the same interest towards a game that was not designed to be competitive.

How I Ended up in a Smash Bros. Tournament

blog2

Undoubtedly, many of you have played the Super Smash Bros. series. They are fun fighting games, where you are able to play with up to four players simultaneously with iconic Nintendo characters. The gameplay is straightforward and the controls are simple – for most players, it’s all about duking it out and seeing who’s the best in the group. To have fun with friends during the evening hours of a day. To spend time with your children, beating them at their own game.

The University of Yale, above. I offer it for free to you. Yup. Seriously. No kidding. Think I’m exaggerating ? Well what do you expect, this is a teaser to get your attention and to turn you into a click-whore, so of course I won’t make balanced statements in the teaser. What you’ll read if you click below is very likely going to change your life forever for the better. It will make you smarter, healthier, and you’ll have more women in your life (or more men, if you are a woman… a woman who likes guys, that goes without saying… oh my, avoiding discriminations make for ridiculously, painfully long paragraphs), and you’ll never see the world the same again. EVER. EVER. EVER.

Weekly Software News Jan 13th to 19th

weekly

This past week was reasonably busy. But what made it special is that it was an excellent week for emulators. You get a new, young emulator (3doh for 3DO), an ever-improving one (UAE4ALL, now running faster for AGA stuff), a maturing one (Mupen64Plus, with new audio support for compatibility) and an all-encompassing one (ScummVM, which now plays even the Eye of the Beholder games!). Of course, there was a lot more, too.

Sensible Software 1986-1999

This book is one of the first Kickstarter projects I have supported. Coming from Read-Only Memory Editions, kicking off their publishing work through this first book about a legendary developer of games such as Cannon Fodder, Sensible Soccer, Wizkid and more… I had high expectations when it came to the book, and now that I have been through it, I have mixed feelings to share with you about it.
